THROUGH TIME
World War One
"World War One, also known as the Great War or the War to End All Wars, was a global war originating in Europe that lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. However, many of those who served did not return home until as late as June, 1919. More than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilised in one of the largest wars in history. Over nine million combatants and seven million civilians died as a result of the war.
... During the war, church bells throughout the land were silenced, destined only to toll the ominous news that our shores were being invaded. They were first rung again in November 1918, to signal peace." (Wikipedia)
To celebrate and mark the end of World War One, a Bank Holiday was declared in Britain, ‘Peace Day, Saturday 19th July 1919.’ These can be viewed in Bishopdale at the Rookery, former home of Colonel Lodge in the Memorabilia Section.
The Roll of Honour button below leads to a list of all those known to have served during the war from Aysgarth Parish. The Biographies buttons leads to mini-biographies of some of the men and women who served. The information under the Home Front button provides insights into how things were back home in each of the villages within Aysgarth Parish. The Festival of Remembrance 2018 has images of the flower and remembrance festival 2018. The Saturday Concert & Exhibition has details of the concert and a slide show of photographs on the day. The Sunday Remembrance Service has the order of service booklet, the names of the fallen, the Sunday Address and the tribute paid to 'ordinary people doing extraordinary things'. The Memorabilia section is a collection of artefacts from World War One.
